Practice 3. Problem/Solution. (Correction)

The low level of English among students in Murcia is one of the most serious problems in our region. In fact, we have almost the same level we had thirty years ago. In contrast with other regions, ours is not improving in this issue; students are not aware of how important it is to control a foreign language. For this reason, it is necessary to develop solutions in order to promote a better learning of English.

The first solution could be to subtitle films and programs from foreign countries instead of translating them. This measure is already taken in many European countries; consequently, many inhabitants are able to talk two or more languages. If this is done, students could learn indirectly, without realizing that they are acquiring knowledge from a new language. This measure is cheap (everybody has a television in their house) and funny. It is funny and enjoyable owing to people would choose the more interesting program or film for them.

The second solution is to promote reading books whose plots were more appealing for teenagers. Student claim that the things they read in their high school do not affects them. By consequence, they lose the interest. These books can be substituted by other ones whose storyline attracts directly a teenager. For example: love stories or stories which discuss the feelings and situations lived in a normal life.

In conclusion, the level of English in students has barely increased in the last thirty years. Hence, subtitling foreign films or promoting interesting books for teenagers can be a good solution in order to solve this serious problem.
